Charm Bracelet for a Girly-Friend!

I made this sweet bracelet for a wonderful friend for her birthday.

We have been friends since middle school.  She still lives in the town where we grew up.  My parents still live there, so I get to see her whenever I go visit them.  I am visiting them this week, so I just hand delivered her gift!

Inspired by Vintage Jewelry

I absolutely love vintage jewelry. I’ve been collecting it, especially rhinestone jewelry, since I was a teenager.  So, I guess it is natural that pieces from vintage jewelry would make their way into the jewelry I create.  I love to use components from broken, mismatched, and disassembled  vintage jewelry as well as vintage beads.  I even collect clips and buckles from old shoes and belts.vintage assemblace rhinestone earrings by Janell Mithani

Of course, I would never take apart a special or valuable piece of jewelry.  Those, I just save to wear on special occasions… like when I go to the grocery store.  🙂

I really love the  slightly worn look to pieces that have aged.  It makes me think that someone must have really loved the piece and wore it all the time.  Or that a special person, who loved them very much, gave it to them.  I know,  I am a hopeless romantic!

I also love mixing components that I create (like the little rose bud above) with vintage beads.  Clear crystals and pearls are one of my favorite combinations.

I used a vintage shoe buckle as the focal piece for this necklace. I have been eyeing some of my girlfriends shoes…

I was missing my favorite color green, so I added some colors into this necklace.

Doesn’t my daughters vintage perfume bottle show off this sweet bracelet?  I borrowed a few from her collection to use as “props” on my latest photo shoot.

Oh, but don’t worry —  I haven’t forgotten about my fairies!   I am in the process of re-learning to solder (I haven’t soldered since college and that was a very long time ago!) and I have this fabulous idea to mix tiny images of my fairy paintings with my assemblage jewelry.  I am so excited about it!  Actually, I have thought about doing this for a while now, “marrying” the two things I love to create.  I just had to think about it and figure out the process.  I will share pictures of these new creations soon.

Moving Sale At My Online Jewelry Store

I have decided to move my online jewelry store from the StorEnvy platform to Etsy.  To prepare for my virtual move, I am having a big sale on my StorEnvy site. 30% off everything in my shop!

Just type in the code MOVE30 at checkout to receive 30% off your entire order! Sale ends June 30th, 2015. http://www.janellmithanijewelry.storenvy.com..

Even though it’s a virtual move, it’s been lot’s of work. I’ve read so many articles on SEO lately, I dreamed about it!  🙂  I want to make sure I set up my store as well as possible.  I have learned a lot about having an online store with my StorEnvy site, including realizing it is not the right platform for my artisan jewelry.  I’m planning to open my Etsy store on July 1, 2015.

Also, If you have a store on Etsy (or not) , I’d love to hear any advice you would like to share.  I’d really appreciate it!  Thanks!

New Valentine’s Jewelry

I have been working on some new jewelry pieces for Valentine’s Day.  I needed more pieces for my online store and for some of the boutiques that carry my jewelry.  This is such a fun time of year for me!  You can see more at my online store here.

A Jewelry Gift Honoring Our Grandmother

My grandmother had a collection of thimbles that she gave me a few years before she passed away.   They have been in a drawer in my jewelry box for about 10 years.

I was looking through them a few months ago and found one that had a hole in the top of it.   thimblecharmneck2B

I think my grandmother must have used this one so much that her needle went completely through the top of it.  I had seen a few thimble necklaces on Pinterest, so I thought it would be fun to make a necklace for my sis for Christmas.  I began with this thimble and then added other things that were special and sentimental to our family.

I also have a wonderful vintage button collection, so I added some of them to the necklace and made a separate shorter necklace that could be worn with the thimble necklace.  I used one of my mother of pearl buttons.  (Beautiful button, but did not photograph very well…)

I made another button necklace for my niece out of some fresh water pearls and a mother of pearl button from my stash.    MotherofPearlButton2B

For Christmas, My Aunt sent me one of my other grandmother’s thimbles, so I am going to make a thimble necklace for myself.   I just loved the one I made for my sis.  Now I am totally hooked on button and thimble jewelry!

Open Studios Tour is Today!

Today is the Day!  Our charming little town at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains has an annual ‘Open Studios Tour” and I am thrilled to be asked to participate this year.  I didn’t realize I had such creative neighbors!  🙂  This has been a wonderful experience for me, as I have made new friends with really talented, generous, and wonderful artists in my neighborhood.

I have “spruced” up the studio and cleaned out all the cobwebs!

I have also created more jewelry pieces.

I think I picked up a million beads from the floor!  🙂

There are about 20 artists sharing their work at nine different studios around town as well as three retail locations.

Each studio is about a 3-5 minute drive from each other and we are hoping for a big crowd! (Or I will be eating all the cookies!)

Have a wonderful creative day, Janell

Working on Jewelry This Week

In between painting and sketching, I have created quite a few pieces of  jewelry this summer.  I have been inspired by my garden and warm and cozy colors.  (I think I am ready for Fall!)   I love the intricate, detailed process of creating wearable pieces.  So this week, I finally got started photographing and posting them to my online store.

Gold and turquoise crocheted earrings with rose dangle by Janell Mithani

I have been finding inspiration in my garden.   I was visiting my mom a few months ago and was peeking through her stash of beads and found a gold metal bead that happened to have slots in it.  I picked up my pliers and peeled back the ends and thought of a rose bud and loved it.  I brought a few beads home with me to create into rosebuds to add to my designs.  I used one of them as a finishing touch on this three strand bracelet, too.

I have really been enjoying working with antique copper wire.

Crochet cluster earrings

I love the warmth it brings to my pieces. And I am loving agate and turquoise lately, too.

I have been thinking of also opening a store on Etsy.  I opened my site on Storenvy as I had a few friends that had their stores there.   When I tell people where my store is online, most of them have never heard of StorEnvy.com and I find myself explaining it is kind of like Etsy and then they say, “oh, yeah.”

I’d love to hear your opinion about Etsy vs. Storenvy!  Thanks so much.  🙂

A Steampunk Jewelry Workshop

Here are a few pieces that my students made in a recent SteamPunk jewelry workshop.  The workshop was at the Santa Catalina Branch Library, just down the street from our house.  I had both teens and adults in the this workshop and it was great.  I just love how each one is so different and unique.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I wish everyone a fun, safe and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I was adding new pieces of jewelry to my web store this weekend and got in the “green” spirit.

Green, pink and copper crocheted bracelet by Janell Mithani

I just love this bracelet.  And yes, green is my favorite color. 🙂 I crocheted three strands of wire and glass beads and wire wrapped a custom clasp.

Green heart drop earrings with crocheted wire chain

These are fun dangle earrings for someone who loves green.  I made a similar pair for myself and I wear them a lot… since 1/2 my wardrobe is green. OK, more like 3/4 of my wardrobe. 🙂

Do you love the color green as much as I do?   If not, what is your favorite color?

Have a wonderful, creative and GREEN day, Janell
