Working on Jewelry This Week

In between painting and sketching, I have created quite a few pieces of  jewelry this summer.  I have been inspired by my garden and warm and cozy colors.  (I think I am ready for Fall!)   I love the intricate, detailed process of creating wearable pieces.  So this week, I finally got started photographing and posting them to my online store.

Gold and turquoise crocheted earrings with rose dangle by Janell Mithani

I have been finding inspiration in my garden.   I was visiting my mom a few months ago and was peeking through her stash of beads and found a gold metal bead that happened to have slots in it.  I picked up my pliers and peeled back the ends and thought of a rose bud and loved it.  I brought a few beads home with me to create into rosebuds to add to my designs.  I used one of them as a finishing touch on this three strand bracelet, too.

I have really been enjoying working with antique copper wire.

I love the warmth it brings to my pieces. And I am loving agate and turquoise lately, too.

I have been thinking of also opening a store on Etsy.  I opened my site on Storenvy as I had a few friends that had their stores there.   When I tell people where my store is online, most of them have never heard of StorEnvy.com and I find myself explaining it is kind of like Etsy and then they say, “oh, yeah.”

I’d love to hear your opinion about Etsy vs. Storenvy!  Thanks so much.  🙂

Have a wonderful, creative day, Janell

A Steampunk Jewelry Workshop

Here are a few pieces that my students made in a recent SteamPunk jewelry workshop.  The workshop was at the Santa Catalina Branch Library, just down the street from our house.  I had both teens and adults in the this workshop and it was great.  I just love how each one is so different and unique.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I wish everyone a fun, safe and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I was adding new pieces of jewelry to my web store this weekend and got in the “green” spirit.

Green, pink and copper crocheted bracelet by Janell Mithani

I just love this bracelet.  And yes, green is my favorite color. 🙂 I crocheted three strands of wire and glass beads and wire wrapped a custom clasp.

Green heart drop earrings with crocheted wire chain

These are fun dangle earrings for someone who loves green.  I made a similar pair for myself and I wear them a lot… since 1/2 my wardrobe is green. OK, more like 3/4 of my wardrobe. 🙂

Do you love the color green as much as I do?   If not, what is your favorite color?

Have a wonderful, creative and GREEN day, Janell

I had fun finding props and taking all kinds of pictures.  I worked with natural open shade light out on my back patio.  (Here in Southern California it is a nice sunny day!)  I like open shade light the best as it is flat enough to not cast shadows (like direct sunlight), but bright enough to show off the jewelry.  I only cropped the photo’s and did no re-touching as I want the pictures to convey how the jewelry really appears.

I also found out that you want to take more pictures than you think you need.  When working really close, you will have some shots that are out of focus.  The ol’ “hold your breath and squeeze the shutter” approach worked well, too.

After years as a portrait photographer, it has been fun to photograph my art and jewelry.  And, no matter how funny I was,  I couldn’t coax a smile out of that jewelry!  🙂

Have you heard of StorEnvy.com?  Do you have a store on their website?  If so, let me know.

Have a wonderful creative day, Janell

New Jewelry for February – Wire Crochet and Embroidery

I have been busy creating new jewelry.  I just love hearts (look at my logo) so this is my favorite time of the year to create jewelry!  And red, I love to work with red and pink, maybe because when I was a teenager, everyone would tell me that I couldn’t wear red or pink because I had red hair.  Don’t get me wrong, green is one of my favorite colors, but I do like to wear more than one color!  Fortunately, when I went off to college I quit listening to what everyone else thought and started wearing all the colors I loved and still do.   These days I wear lots of red (a warm tone red) and pink (an orangish warmish pink) all the time.  And of course I wear plenty of black… it shows of my jewelry so well!  🙂

Contact me if you are interested in a piece. Prices range from $45 – $150.  I am also looking for a few new places to sell my jewelry.  I love creating jewelry and I have amassed quite an inventory. If you know of an artisan boutique, art gallery or gift store that you think would be interested, please let me know.  Thanks!

Earrings and Photo Pendant Workshops

I am teaching two new jewelry workshops at Belle’s Nest on Friday, July 27th.  An earring class and a crystal photo pendant class.  Call Belle’s Nest at 626-355-0200 to sign up.

Glass Tile Photo or Art Pendant Class

Friday, July 27th
11-12:30 pm
Level: Beginner
Fee: $30, includes all tools and supplies

A great jewelry project you will love!  This is a perfect project for those who want to make their own pendant to show off a piece of art or your favorite photograph.  Janell also has a wonderful collection of art and photos on hand for you to choose from.  NOTE:  If you are providing your own image, it needs to be 1″ square and printed on a color or B/W Laser copy or on photographic paper.  (Ink jet images will bleed their color once adhesive is applied.)  I also recommend you bring more than one image or duplicates so you have a few choices or you trim it too small.  Do not trim them until you get to the class as I will demonstrate how to get a perfect fit for your crystal.  You will learn how to create a beautiful pendant that is protected by a glass crystal tile with a silver base.

Earrings, Earrings, Earrings!

Friday, July 27th
2:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Level: Beginner
Fee: $30, includes all tools and supplies

You will create 3 pairs of unique earrings that show off your style and charm!   You will learn to make simple loops, wire wrapping, component making, bead design and custom ear-wires.  These basic jewelry techniques are used to make bracelets and necklaces, too.  Once you learn these jewelry techniques, you will be creating your own fashion trends!  The earrings in the photograph are examples of the variety of earrings you can make.  All tools and supplies provided including a variety of beads to choose from.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about my workshops.  I hope to see you in one soon!  🙂  Janell
